Another interpretation of this song was chosen by geo.tv for its farewell to viewers when it was shut down on Nov. 16, 2007, by the Dubai authorities, under pressures exercised by COAS Musharraf. See Geo TV to Shut Down - 6 on pkpolitics.com (the songs starts at 10' ca).. Extremely moving even if you don't understand Urdu, like me. But thanks to Atif Abdul-Rahman, who posted this subtitled version of the Allama Iqbal's poem in Martial Law - What can we do?, now we can access the meaning of the words. His poignant post tells us what the poem represents for Pakistanis.

...On GeoPakistani.com, Khan hosts a 26-minute video called, "Islam and America Through Eyes Of Imran Khan." It's a powerful look at the region from the inside -- and explains why ordinary Pakistanis see America the way they do. He starts the documentary at a rock concert in Pakistan, the very place that is a symbol of America.
"The youth of Pakistan love American pop culture. They love films. They know who Julia Roberts is, they know who Arnold Schwarzenegger is, they know who Andre Aggasi is and they love these guys," rock star Salman Ahmad tells Khan in the film. "But at the same time, the United States government is like a bull in a china shop."
Khan says in the film that underlying everything is the notion that America cares only when its own people or its own interests are threatened. It's a powerful film. One that helps us Americans see ourselves through the eyes of Pakistanis. That is a good enough reason to watch it. But more important, right this minute, we should watch this work as an act of defiance against tyranny.
